Why You'll Love the Summer Sock Sprint!

The Summer Sock Sprint is almost here, Thistlers, and this fast-paced Knit-Along is one of our favorite ways to make steady summer progress with good wool, good company, and a bit of friendly momentum.

Brand-new sock knitters, please take heart. If you have never knit socks before, this is a splendid time to begin. The Woolly Thistle community is full of encouraging knitters who remember their first heel turn, their first gusset, and that satisfying moment when a tube of knitting becomes an actual sock. You do not have to know everything before you start. We have resources, friendly chatter, project inspiration, and plenty of Thistlers ready to cheer you along.

The 2026 Summer Sock Sprint is FREE to join. Sign up, choose your yarn, gather your supplies, and get ready to knit along between Friday, July 17 and Friday, July 31.

Why Socks Make Sense for Summer

A sweater can feel like a lapful in July, but socks tuck neatly into a project bag and travel with very little fuss. They are useful, budget-friendly, and easy to pick up during the odd scraps of time that appear during summer days, such as a few rounds on the porch, in the passenger seat, at the park, or before supper.

Socks are also a satisfying skill-building project because one pair can teach so much in a manageable amount of knitting. You can practice working in the round, shaping a heel, picking up stitches, decreasing for a toe, and reading your knitting with more confidence. Lace, cables, colorwork, stripes, ribbing, or a sturdy plain sock can all fit into this small but mighty project category.

And if you do not finish your pair in two weeks, no worries at all. All knitting is good knitting. The point is to cast on, make progress, enjoy the company, and add another useful woolly piece to your drawer.

Favorite Sock Yarns for the Sprint

A good sock yarn has work to do. It needs strength, spring, comfort, and enough character to keep you admiring your stitches as the fabric grows. These TWT favorites bring their own woolly merit to the Sock Sprint, with options for classic fingering-weight socks, sturdy boot socks, breed-rich knitting, and handy gift pairs.

West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 Ply

West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 Ply is a dependable classic with a strong British story behind it. Made in Yorkshire, this fingering-weight yarn combines wool, Bluefaced Leicester, and nylon for a smooth, sturdy, machine-washable sock yarn with a generous 100g ball format that suits a full pair of socks.

The Bluefaced Leicester gives the yarn softness and sheen, while the nylon adds strength for regular wear. This is a fine place to begin for knitters who want an easy-care sock yarn with a proper wool foundation and a broad color range for stripes, contrast cuffs, everyday socks, and gift knitting.

John Arbon Exmoor Sock

John Arbon Exmoor Sock has breed character in every skein. This 4-ply sock yarn blends Exmoor Blueface, Corriedale, Zwartbles, and nylon, creating a hard-working yarn with bounce, subtle natural flecks, and crisp stitch definition.

Exmoor Blueface brings durability and spring, Corriedale adds softness, Zwartbles lends earthy depth, and nylon gives extra staying power for socks that see regular use. The 50g skeins are especially useful for stripes, colorwork, contrast heels and toes, or mixing shades across a pair.

Rauma Vandre

Rauma Vandre is named for the Norwegian word for hiking, and it earns that name well. Made with 100% Norwegian wool, including Spælsau wool for long-fiber strength, Vandre is practical, sturdy, and built for socks that may see boots, trails, cold floors, and winter errands.

Because Vandre is a worsted-weight yarn, it knits into thicker socks much faster than a fingering-weight pair. Choose it for boot socks, hiking socks, slippers, and rugged woolly accessories that ask for more substance underfoot.

Sandnes Garn Sisu

Sandnes Garn Sisu is one of those practical, steady yarns that earns its place in the stash. This fingering-weight Norwegian yarn blends wool with nylon, giving knitters the warmth and hand of wool with the durability needed for socks, children's knits, accessories, and everyday garments.

Sisu is smooth, superwash treated, and easy-care, making it a useful choice for gift knitting and socks that need regular washing. It also shows texture and stitch patterns clearly, so it can carry plain socks, ribbed socks, patterned socks, and tidy colorwork with confidence.

Daughter of a Shepherd Drover Sock Yarn

Daughter of a Shepherd Drover Sock Yarn is a staff favorite, thanks in part to its wonderfully sheepy scent and handsome natural shades. Made with British wool and milled by John Arbon in Devon, Drover is spun into a sturdy 3-ply, high-twist sock yarn with a pinch of nylon for added durability.

The breed blend includes Hebridean, Zwartbles, and Exmoor Blueface, giving Drover depth, strength, and a natural palette that feels right at home in heritage-style socks. It is a strong choice for knitters who love breed interest, rustic character, and socks with real wool substance.

Rambler Yarn by The Woolly Thistle

No Sock Sprint yarn roundup would be complete without Rambler, our very own 100% non-superwash wool yarn. Rambler was created to honor breed, provenance, and practical knitting, with a springy, bouncy hand and a 3-ply light fingering structure designed with socks in mind.

Rambler begins with Dorset wool, a medium wool with a down-like feel and pleasing squish. Corriedale and Romney add softness, strength, and depth, with Romney contributing a natural gray undertone. The finished yarn has enough twist for sock knitting while still suiting colorwork, accessories, and textured projects.

Choose individual skeins, color packs, or the full collection if the whole palette calls your name. We get it.
