Yarn - The Journal of Scottish Yarns is a bi-annual journal focusing on community, history, culture, and creativity of textiles in Scotland. This publication is colorful and offers an insightful view of all things yarn related, making connections and joining threads.
The Journal Issue 9 is themed after Bernat Klein: the designer based in the Scottish Borders Region and colorist who was active from the 1960s. You'll find articles about the history of Scottish wool and native sheep breeds (Vikings, St Kilda and Romans) as well as stories of people, projects and initiatives which showcase Scottish textile arts and crafts and artisans.

Knit Designs:
- BERNAT KLEIN VEST Worked from the bottom up in pieces and seamed. The neckband is added later but clever detailing in the stitches means the armhole edges are finished while knitting the body.
- SELKIRK YOKE TOP A top-down knitted yoke top with a simple mosaic motif and soft textures.
- STUDIO WRAP & SCARF A rectangular scarf and double-width wrap created from silk-mohair lace-weight held together with wool for some of the rows and stitches across a textured grid.
- PLAYFUL STITCHES VEST Features different colours on front and back and tiny slipped stitches to add texture, with only one colour used per row. Ties at the side finish the look of this knitted tabard-style vest, a versatile garment for layering.
- COMMONALITY COWL A fabulous textural patterned scarf knitted in the round featuring a picot stripe and basketweave.
- FRANCES TEE Knitted in the round from the bottom up featuring a gorgeous wave pattern and geometric embellishments.
Crochet Designs:
- HOMAGE VEST Inspired by the over-sized houndstooth motif that Bernat Klein used in his textile designs, the vest is crocheted from the bottom up in pieces and comes with instructions for crocheted or knitted ribbing.
- SUNDERLAND CROCHET TOP is crocheted from the top down in the round using a textured stitch that weaves alpaca yarn through a 4ply mesh.
- WEAVER'S SCARF Inspired by the Huguenot weavers of 17th century London, chunky alpaca is held behind wool or wool/silk yarn to emulate a woven fabric.
