Vovó (Portuguese for Grandma) is a versatile and hard wearing non-superwash yarn made entirely from fine Portuguese wool, mainly from Campaniça sheep. It is a great choice for sweaters and cardigans intended for daily wear. The Woolly Thistle is proud to stock Retrosaria Yarns by Rosa Pomar, which are minimally processed and animal friendly.

Vovó is made from the wool of free range sheep. Mulesing is not practiced in Portugal.

Shades 01, 20, and 40 are not dyed. Like all Retrosaria yarns, Vovó is non-superwash and not bleached.

Retrosaria Vovo Sport

I am loving this new-to-me yarn. Kelsey helped me with suggestions for the Meiju In Between Dreams cardigan, and Vovo is perfect. The swatch blocked beautifully with a soft hand and wonderful stitch definition. I may be in over my head with the initial short rows, but a few bouts of unknitting were easy with Vovo. Highly recommend!

Retrosaria Vovó Sport

Really enjoy working with this yarn. It is smooth with nice twist and hand. Yarn feels substantial but yet light and soft. Thickness is consistent. Making Cinnamonum Pullover which has simple lace, cables and twisted stitches in yoke and a stockinette body. Like yarn so much I purchased another sweaters worth. Visited Retrosaria Rosa Pomar shop in 2023 and was impressed with quality of yarns.

Delightfully soft yet crisp sportweight yarn

I love trying new yarns and was eager to try this Portuguese wool. I wanted to play around with some stranded knitting. It's working really well for stranded knitting. The hand is much softer than I expected but the yarn still has a crisp finish that's good for colorwork. Nice elasticity, too. Would love to see this in some brighter colors but I suspect the undyed wool has a gray or tan cast to it that makes the colors a bit more muted. Bonus: the label is hilarious. Definitely would use again!
