This Wensleydale Aran yarn is from the great for knitting soft cowls, scarves, and sweaters. The British Aran weight is what we know here in the US as a worsted weight. The Wensleydale Sheep produce a fine longwool with beautiful luster and these colors are just scrumptious. The worsted spin produces a fineness and sheen which creates a silky look and feel. Great for knitting soft cowls, scarves, and sweaters!
Please note: Wensleydale Longwool notes that this yarn is not as heavy as a typical aran weight yarn.

At first glance, this is a beautiful, shiny, strong yarn. But as with all UK yarns, Aran is not Aran in the USA. It is a 4-ply thin yarn and might be a DK weight or slightly thinner according to USA #4 grade yarn. I would not use it to knit an Aran type sweater. I knit a sample with on 5.0 mm needles and it is too loose and will not keep me warm. But it is a beautiful yarn to be used for knits that do not need the extra weight. It was lovely to knit with and has good stitch definition. I gave it a 5-star rating because it is beautiful, but not for what I require.
Thank you for your review, Brigitte! We are glad to hear that you enjoy knitting with the Wensleydale Aran. In the UK, the term Aran is used to describe the weight we consider worsted here in the US, so it is lighter than a US Aran weight yarn.
A beautiful yarn with a nice drape and halo. I don't know how it does it, but it is woolly and silky at the same time. It slips on my metal needles so nicely, but sticks when I drop stitches. My skin is sensitive so I will have to wear a shirt under the sweater I am knitting, but I love the fabric it is creating. I have enough to knit another sweater and I can't wait to start another.
