Step back in time to the Victorian era with Victorian Housecats to Knit by Sara Elizabeth KellnerThis book is a charming collection of 20 whimsical cat patterns inspired by the feline-loving Morgans, a proper upper-class British family. From Aunt Pru's regal Persian, to the mischievous Scullery Cat, this book offers a delightful mix of beginner-friendly and advanced designs, each accompanied by vintage 19th-century illustrations that perfectly capture the era’s elegance.

Experienced toy knitters will be rewarded with the cutest and quite realistic cat finished object.  You're carried through the pages with a personal tour of the Morgan home and you'll find yourself knitting your own cozy, cat-filled world in no time.

  • Hardcover; 145 pages
  • Language: English
  • 20 cat patterns
  • Weight: Approx. 21.5 oz
  • Dimensions: 9.25 x 10.25 x .5 inches
  • Date of Publication: 2024

Construction Information about the designs: Most of the patterns in this book use a mixture of knitting flat and knitting in the round. Yarn and needle sizes are given for the pattern, ranging from Worsted to Bulky weight on US3 - US5. It is recommended that you make sure that the fabric you create is tighter than it would be for a garment, so the stuffing won’t show through the stitches in the end. Creating a tighter fabric will also help maintain the shape of your creation.

Note this book is a lovely whimsical addition to your library that we recommend to all knitting and cat enthusiasts.  Some of the instructions are quite pithy, so experience and confidence in your knitting abilities are recommended.

About the Designer: Sara Elizabeth Kellner is the designer of Rabbit Hole Knits - toy and animal patterns for hand-knitters. Her goal when designing is to create patterns which portray the animals realistically, yet still evoking the personality of each, a twinkle in each of their eyes, and the question “Did I just see that animal move?” on the lips of every knitter.

Fantastic book!

Beautifully written, photographed, and illustrated. Lots of Patterns are precisely laid out, but I would suggest having an experienced knitter nearby if you’re a newbie. Worth every penny!

Charming!

I got a copy from the library to see what to expect in the way of difficulty, etc. The book is absolutely charming - lovely story and illustrations - and tempting just for those reasons. BUT if you are a beginner knitter, 4 of the patterns in the book have been available for free on Ravelry - the parlor cat both large and small and the window cat both large and small. I have made quite a few of both patterns and sizes over the years -(I didn't check before writing this - perhaps they are no longer available!). These are also the easy patterns - the others require some skill and even the easy ones have a bit of tricky spots. I personally don't enjoy much "sewing up" and the more complicated cats do have to my mind a lot of this. With my lack of sewing skill, this makes my cats look way too amateurish. Thick fluffy yarn can help, of course. If your budget is adequate, this book would be a wonderful addition to your bookshelf; I will save my budget for YARN!

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for 'Victorian Housecats to Knit'. We agree that the story, illustrations, and cats within its pages are adorable! The Tiny Window cat is indeed available as a free pattern on Ravelry (the rest are not though) and would be a great way for a customer to get their feet wet knitting that little one while waiting for their book to arrive.
