Vovó (Portuguese for Grandma) is a versatile and hard wearing non-superwash yarn made entirely from fine Portuguese wool, mainly from Campaniça sheep. It is a great choice for sweaters and cardigans intended for daily wear. The Woolly Thistle is proud to stock Retrosaria Yarns by Rosa Pomar, which are minimally processed and animal friendly.
Vovó is made from the wool of free range sheep. Mulesing is not practiced in Portugal.
Shades 01, 20, and 40 are not dyed. Like all Retrosaria yarns, Vovó is non-superwash and not bleached.
Some of our favorite patterns that call for Retrosaria Vovó are the Drevo Pullover by Teti Lutsak, Fern Forest Cowl by Jennifer Steingass, Cinnamomum Pullover by Teti Lutsak, The whimsical Sock Collective// Socks n. 2 by Melody Hoffmann & Xenakis by Anna Johanna.
We recommend purchasing 2 skeins of this sock yarn (totaling 100g) for an average-sized pair of socks.
I can’t say enough positive things about this yarn. It’s springy, it’s durable, it holds a cable wonderfully, at a tight gauge it doesn’t pill, and it blocks out much softer and with more drape than I’d expect. The color depth and slight heather is gorgeous and even my dark red doesn’t bleed much on blocking. Only con is that the high twist can lead to some twist back on the yarn and fiddliness for colorwork.
I made a whole skirt from this yarn, and it seems like its going to wear so well. The three plies make it strong and I think it will resist pilling very well. The drape is nice as well, and it is soft enough to wear next so skin while still having a rustic quality.
I am loving this new-to-me yarn. Kelsey helped me with suggestions for the Meiju In Between Dreams cardigan, and Vovo is perfect. The swatch blocked beautifully with a soft hand and wonderful stitch definition. I may be in over my head with the initial short rows, but a few bouts of unknitting were easy with Vovo. Highly recommend!
