With over seven years curating The Woolly Thistle's yarn selection and bringing you some of the most special yarns from the UK and beyond, last year we introduced our very own yarn! We are thrilled with this beautiful 100% non-superwash wool yarn that honors the fiber's provenance and potential. The original 10 colors are joined by the latest additions, Cinnamon Fern, Wild Clover, and Merrybells to make a gorgeous range of 13 colors!
Rambler gets its name from those hardy hill-walkers all over Britain who "ramble" around the countryside either on their own or with other like-minded ramblers. We enjoy imagining all ramblers wearing knits in our sock yarn as they walk paths and traverse stiles while always closing the gate behind them!
Inspired by our love for British breeds, we chose Dorset wool as the base for our yarn. A medium wool with a down-like feel and squish, Dorset wool is springy and bouncy, slightly rustic and wonderfully woolly without being coarse or prickly. Corriedale and Romney give additional softness and strength and a bit of depth as the Romney is a natural gray. Our 3-ply fingering weight yarn is strong enough for socks but versatile enough for a wide array of projects.
Structurally, Rambler Yarn is a 3-ply, light fingering with a twist designed for socks. Of course, it's not just for socks! Some of our favorite knitting is colorwork knitting and we've chosen sturdy breeds with British heritage so Rambler will hold up beautifully in the form of stranded colorwork garments, or in solid colored garments with plenty of texture.
You can purchase your Rambler by the skein here or in one of the beautiful Color Packs that we've put together with 7 skeins. Each Color Pack includes the three new colors, paired with a Natural and three Original colors. We also have the 13-pack available in a Large TWT Tote for those who just can't resist the whole beautiful color palette! (We get you!)
Color Pack 1:Natural, Aster, Pine, Lichen, Wild Clover, Cinnamon Fern, Merrybells Color Pack 2: Natural, Lupine, Winter Sky, Lake, Wild Clover, Cinnamon Fern, Merrybells Color Pack 3:Natural, Golden Fern, Blue Spruce, Trillium, Wild Clover, Cinnamon Fern, Merrybells Full Collection: All 13 colors with a Large TWT Tote!
Full disclosure - I haven't started working with any of the skeins yet, but it feels wonderful and I think the colors in real life are very true to what I saw on the computer screen. One of the skeins I bought (Merrybells) is for a specific sock pattern and the others I bought simply because they were beautiful and I wanted to try the yarn. I'm sure I'll be back for more in the future.

Rambler for socks
Purchased three skeins to make socks with and the colors are nice and vibrant and the yarn feels good to work with. My biggest complaint is the inconsistency in thickness. I don't have a yarn winder so I caked the three skeins by hand giving me the opportunity to touch every yard of the yarn. I'm pretty disappointed with how wildly thin it can be one moment to overly thick it gets and worried how it'll play with the integrity and longevity of my socks. I'm waiting to see how the first pair of blocked socks turn out and will provide an updated review.
Hi Jennie, thank you for your review. We appreciate your honest feedback about about the variation of thickness in the yarn. I will certainly share this feedback with the mill. It's our thought that we will experience some variation in the thickness of the yarn because it's a natural product and isn't overly processed when being made into yarn. I think we can expect exact consistency in thicknesses from more commercial yarns but with a smaller batch yarn there will be some variation. That said, we do not expect it to be an alarming amount, but just here or there, and maybe not at all. I am excited to hear your report on the socks you are knitting and we appreciate hearing your update about them. Personally, I have been wearing my Rambler socks over and over again (since the weather turned cooler) and as yet there's not any concerning wear or even pilling, and certainly no holes or thin bits caused by wear.
As always, thank you for shopping at The Woolly Thistle, Corinne

Rambler Sock Yarn
Rambler is a great yarn for socks! I am knitting the Maine Island socks after inspiration from the Sock Sprint and the colorwork is well defined. I recommend trying Rambler for your next sock project!
