The Island and the Forest by Erika Åberg and Lotta H. Löthgren is a deeply personal and inspiring knitting book shaped by a creative exchange between two Swedish designers. Through letters, sketches, and shared reflections, the book unfolds as a dialogue rooted in landscape, season, and the rhythms of everyday life. Organized around the four elements—earth, water, fire, and air—it invites readers into a thoughtful exploration of nature, creativity, and connection.
Alongside this rich correspondence, the book includes 12 timeless knitting patterns designed for everyday wear, from sweaters and vests to accessories. Each piece reflects the designers’ love of natural fibers and Scandinavian craft traditions, offering practical garments that feel both grounded and enduring. Beautifully presented and deeply reflective, this hardcover book is one to return to again and again for inspiration, for making, and for quiet moments with your knitting.

About the Designers:
Erika Åberg (@wynja) is a knitwear designer and writer living with her family and dog on Gotland, an island off the east coast of Sweden. Erika is deeply rooted in Scandinavian craft and her designs are based on the love of nature, wool and island life. She leads wool and walking tours to destinations such as Gotland, Shetland and Iceland. The Island and the Forest is her eleventh book.
Lotta H. Löthgren (@lottahlothgren) is a knitwear designer, writer and yarn-dyer living with her family, dogs and chickens in a village in southeast Sweden, where she also has a yarn shop. As a designer, she loves to translate the natural world into wearable garments. Lotta’s first book, Observations: Knits and Essays from the Forest, was published by Laine Publishing in 2023.
*Swiss binding is a bookbinding technique where the spine is exposed and the cover is attached only to the back page. This allows the book to lie completely flat.
