Introducing Circus Tonic Handmade: Color, Family, and the Joy of Coming Home

Launching Friday, April 11 at 12pm ET

There’s something really special about yarn that tells a story—and we’re thrilled to introduce you to one that’s full of color, connection, and heart. Meet Circus Tonic Handmade Homeward Bound Sport Sock, our very first yarn from Australia, arriving at The Woolly Thistle this Friday.

Behind the name is Hannah, a passionate dyer based in South Australia who made a big leap—from studying molecular biology and working in genomics to hand-dyeing wool full-time. And once you get to know her, it all makes sense. The thoughtful rhythm of lab work now flows into her studio days, where color, science, and a deep appreciation for nature blend beautifully.

Hannah and her partner are raising three kids who spend weekends playing Aussie Rules Football and competing in Surf Life Saving. Life is full—sunny, energetic, grounded in community—and that energy is poured into every skein. She draws inspiration from native birds, local gemstones, and the wild beauty of the South Australian coast. Her colorways often reflect her love of books, history, and the places that have shaped her, including a memorable trip to Shetland for Wool Week in 2023.

And the yarn itself? It’s something truly special. The Homeward Bound Sock Sets are dyed on a base of sport-weight SRS Merino with nylon—an unusual, ethically sourced blend from a small Australian stud farm in New South Wales. The sheep used in this yarn are Smooth Rolling Skin Merinos, a naturally fly strike–resistant breed that requires no mulesing. The wool is then spun by a fantastic small business committed to making non-superwash yarns more accessible to dyers across Australia. It’s soft, strong, and spun with care—perfect for sock knitters who value both quality and responsible sourcing.

The colorways in this collection are named after South Australian towns and landscapes—each one a love letter to movement, memory, and the feeling of coming home. These skeins are bursting with energy, comfort, and intention.

We feel so lucky to welcome Hannah and her work to The Woolly Thistle. We hope you’ll take a moment to read more about her journey and the inspiration behind this beautiful yarn.
