In this comprehensive, in-person class, you will discover the magic of Shetland-inspired colorwork. Explore the vibrant world of Fair Isle knitting with Gudrun Johnston and gain hands-on experience in color, technique, and tradition.

From Gudrun:

In this class we will dip our toes into the world of Fair Isle knitting! We will look at choosing colors, color dominance, stranding the yarn, speed swatching in the round and we will even do some steeking (cutting into our knitting)! We will be working with a tried-and-true product, 100% Shetland yarn, traditionally used for Fair Isle knitting. 

This class is intended as an introduction to Shetland wool and its suitability to stranded knitting. You can be a beginner or seasoned colorwork knitter.

Class Date and Time: Total of 3 hours of class time

• September 6: 10:30 AM to 2 PM (3 hour class and an extra half hour to pick your color palette in the shop)

Skills Needed to Take this Course: 

• Must have basic knitting knowledge - Cast-on, Knit, Purl, Cast-off

Materials Included with your Class:

• Included in your class fee is the cost of 5x 25g balls of J&S 2ply Jumper weight that you'll pick on the day of the class. If you'd like to substitute for Jamieson's of Shetland Spindrift, there will be a slight cost difference that you'll pay when you pick your colors during the class.
  

Materials Needed (these are not included in the price of this class):  

• Size US 4 / 3.5mm or US 3 / 3.25mm 24 inch circular needle (if you are a loose knitter, use the smaller size needle
• 2 Stitch Markers
• Scissors

Meet your Instructor: 

Gudrun Johnston is a Shetland-born knitwear designer currently living in Massachusetts. Known for her accessible, modern-day knitting patterns inspired by her Shetland heritage, she draws deep creative influence from her roots. Gudrun is a valued friend of The Woolly Thistle; She hosts her own podcast "The Shetland Trader" and is the author of multiple knitting books. She'll be visiting us before embarking on an enticing nine-month stay in Shetland.

Class Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel your class registration, we offer a full refund for cancellations made more than one week prior to the class start date. Cancellations made within one week of the class start date may be eligible for a refund only if we are able to fill the vacated spot. If we are unable to fill the spot, we will not be able to issue a refund.

We reserve the right to cancel a class if minimum enrollment is not met or due to unforeseen circumstances (weather, instructor illness, etc). In such cases, we will notify participants as soon as possible and issue a full refund for the class amount.
