Wilma Malcolmson makes history as the first SWW Patron to be honored for a second year (2020 and 2021).  Her hat design for this year is Da Crofter's. Colorway #2 uses Jamieson & Smith 2ply Jumper Weight Yarn in a beautiful selection of colors.

Yarn Set Includes:

  • Jamieson & Smith 2ply Jumper Weight Yarn in original colorway*
  • A Woolly Thistle stitch marker
  • The Woolly Thistle Tote Bag

The pattern for this yarn set must be purchased directly from the designer on Ravelry: Da Crofter's Kep by Wilma Malcomson.

*This set contains 6 balls Jamieson & Smith Yarn to knit the 2021 Official Shetland Wool Week pattern "Da Crofter's Kep." (Note one ball is a 50g J&S Shetland Supreme paired with 5 balls of J&S 2ply JW).

J&S Shetland Supreme & 2ply Jumper Weight Yarn is 100% real Shetland Wool and make in UK.

You will also need:

- 1 set of double-pointed needles (DPNs) or your preferred needles for knitting small diameters in the round.  Different gauges are used to achieve different hat sizes so swatching is important.  Suggested needle sizes are 2.5mm, 2.75mm or 3.0mm depending on the size of hat you are knitting.

A few words about Da Crofter's Kep from Wilma Malcolmson:

Tammy Fraser, my father, was a crofter who worked the land throughout his life. Although this involved long days, difficult times and many struggles, I know that he loved what he did and remember the great pride he had in his achievements.

So, just as ‘Katie’s Kep’ is a tribute to my mother and all the knitters like her, ‘Da Crofter’s Kep’ is my way of honouring the people who work the land here in Shetland. For generations, and in all weathers, their commitment to their land and livestock has ensured that families are provided for and a special way of life has not been lost. Without them there would be no Shetland sheep, no wool and no yarn... imagine that!

Also just a fun wee note that "Da" in Shetland means "The" so with that logic can you figure out what Da Wadderman would be?  For a hint you can give Da Wadderman a look and follow on Instagram!

Crofter's Kep

Gorgeous colors!! I'm making one of these keps for each of my family members, and I know they will be a big hit. The WT bag is a great addition to the project.
